Thrifted Gift
October 23rd, 2007
Look at these goodies! My dear friend Emily found these at an estate sale and was generous enough to share. There’s a whole bag full of already made yo-yos and about 60 cut circles to make more. It looks like the woman had a quilt in mind. I just love the fabrics, especially the green and blue anchor fabric. I can’t decide if I want to finish her vision, or do something of my own. Does anyone have any good ideas for yo-yo use?
Ryan and I are headed to San Francisco this weekend. Does anyone have any recommendations on sites/places to eat (we’re vegetarians)? I would love some suggestions.

Many moons ago I covered a lampshade with them, it turned out super cute.

You MUST go to Greens! Fresh, locally grown, seasonal and fabulous! Right downtown! Very classy dress-up kind of place!

Oh, San Francisco, my first love!
I’m not a vegetarian, so I probably won’t be much help as far as dining recommendations go.
If you’re renting car a few fabulous places would be:
1) Santa Cruz/Mystery Spot
2) Muir Woods
3) Stinson Beach
4) Half Moon Bay (crafty/artistic shops downtown)
5) Hawk Hill
6) Muir Beach (dark, wooded, misty beaches with fabulous fruit/veggie stands on the way)
If you’re not leaving the city:
1) SF MOMA
2) Powell Street
3) Chinatown
4) Pier 39 (rather touristy)
5) Presidio
6) Kayaking and/or sailing on the bay (one of my fondest memories)
7) Take BART to Berkeley….a must! (the easiest way to do it is just wait for a Richmond-bound train, drops you off right where you need to be…downtown Berkeley). I’m positive there are Vegan eateries. Also fabulous vintage shops and such a lovely diversity of people and things to do).
Hope this helps a bit!

for the yo yos i recommend a table runner. i’ve never seen one, but i think it would be great on a wooden table. just a thought…-kb

Greens Restaurant is my all time favorite vegetarian restaurant in San Francisco. It’s on the water in the Fort Mason Center. If you like Indian food, you might also want to check out Gaylord Indian Restaurant in the Embarcadero–while not strictly vegetarian, they have lots of non-meat dishes.

I agree with Kelly that a table runner would be lovely made of yo-yos. I was also wondering if coasters could be made with four of them together–although I’m not sure of the size of your yo-yo treasures. But sets of coasters would make lovely gifts at the holidays and the remainder could be used on a doll-size quilt or a hot pad or fun bits on an apron…and so on.

Lucky girl to get such cheerfully colored yo-yos. I’ve only been to San Francisco once, briefly, so I’m of no help, but I remember really liking it there. I swear, I need to get closer to a large mass of water soon.
