Activity Book of Yore
August 17th, 2007
This book was mine and kept at my grandma’s house for my visits there. I always remember it being there and have no idea where it came from. It’s got my name and birth date embroidered on the binding, so it must have been made with me in mind. I have very vivid memories of my grandma teaching me how to braid and how to unbutton the train wheels. It’s a great learning toy and one I loved. It looks like it took eons to make, though. It’s got about 14 pages and each is impeccably finished and has stood the test of time. A few more of the pages are posted on my Flickr page if you’re interested.

It’s lovely and thoughtful and whoever made it spent a lot of time on it. How sweet for you.

I recognize this book – I made one using the same pattern for my little sisters. They are now 12 and 15, and I’m 30. I wonder if my mom kept that thing! we should definitely keep it in the family.

Do the clothes on the clothesline snap on?

I also had a similar handmade book which I have thought of often since my daughter was born. I don’t know what happened to it and my daughter is a bit old for it now, but maybe I’ll make one for my niece. I remember it quite fondly. Thanks for sharing yours!

I had that same book when I was a kid. My brother had one too but instead of braiding the hair he laced up a football. My book was made around 1982. I wonder if that was a popular pattern.

My two older kids (9 and 12) have exactly this book that my husband’s mom made for them!
I guess I will have to make one for the little one myself – my MIL has Alzheimer’s now :( I should ask FIL for permission to look for the pattern.

my husband has quiet book that almost identical to this – it was made by a sweet lady from his church — could this lady be your grandmother? or maybe it was a pattern from years ago that they both followed? what a lovely little book though…such precious memories.
