Necktie Quilt
January 16th, 2006
This is the tie quilt that my talented grandmother made for me. Some people think these are hideous, but I find them stunning. I love the mishmash of color and the idea that these were worn around countless offices and important occasions. This quilt is particularly meaningful, because several of these ties are from my father and grandfather’s collections – one tie is what my grandfather wore to my parents wedding. I have several favorite squares and it seems to change over the years. I love this gold square and there’s a great green and gold tie that has wheat on it that reminds me of my Kansas heritage.

Way cool !!! I’m just learning to quilt and this is a great idea for someone that has lots of ties. Me I don’t. Maybe I can sponge them off others. ha. Thanks for showing.

Love the quilt! Did you open the ties out and remove the linings before sewing them to a fabric square? I am about to try one of these and I think that is what I will do. However, my husband thinks I should not open the ties out completely.

I would love to have the pattern, too. My father-in-law passed away April 29, 2008 and in cleaning out his closet, I found the most gorgeous ties.

Where can I find instructions on quilting with neck ties?
15. Bonnie | July 16th, 2008 at 2:20 am
neighbor makes tie quilts… you have to get them at garage sales or church sales.. wash them all n dry in dryer… take them apart n iron. take 8 or 9 inch pieces of material. sew strips of tie on one end and lay another piece on n sew..n keep going u can get 4 or 5 different colors on one block.. after you figure what size quilt u want… you figure how many you need to make to get the size you want…. she then gets a sheet or large quilters material for the backing, but doesnt put the quilters batting inbetween as it will be way to heavy..if you have more quiestions..email me

My mother-in-law and I both quilt and have been looking for a pattern for this… any ideas on where to get it? We’re also looking for a handkerchief quilt that doesn’t require them to be cut.

I will join the ranks of those wishing for the pattern. It is a beautiful quilt and love your grandmother for her forethought.
Thanks for sharing her talent.

There is a PDF file called Hooked on Hankies here that uses whole handkerchiefs.

Well now that I look at it, it is hankie prints but I think you can use real hankies too.

I am so excited to finally get some ideas to make a necktie quilt. I have a shopping bag nearly full of my husband’s silk ties – some of them $35.00 and $40.00 each – so this should make a beautiful quilt. I have asked around for years for help in getting started – even 1 friend who quilts non-stop and she could not get me started.
THANKS – NANCY SHEALEY

I’ve always wanted to make a necktie quilt too and have just been asked this week to make one – and she gave me all his ties – I would really like the pattern and instructions.

About.com has an article on making a quilt from silk ties. It was made using ties and the log cabin pattern.

I am going to make a necktie quilt as a donation for an animal rescue. I got all of the silk ties from donations to the thrift shops. So far this is the best idea I have found. I am going to leave the ties as is and sew strips into blocks and then blocks together for the top. The back I am going to use the smaller strips and sew them into logcabin blocks.
I like the way this was quilted. I think I will copy that for my quilt.

I would love to have your pattern. My dad died yesterday and he had so many ties and his dad had many ties that went to him so I’d love to make this and have it as a reminder.

I’d love to have a pattern for the necktie quilt. My husband passed away in April and had a great collection of ties….I’d love to make a quilt out of them. My husband and I made t-shirt quilts…Pete was the designer and pinner I was the cutter and sewer….they turned out great. T-shirt quilts are a great way to save all those memories from treasured t-shirts.

The quilt is beautiful. I am trying to decide how to make one with my collection of ties. I saw a pattern years ago in a magazine which used the full tie but have never found the pattern again. Wish I had kept it.
God bless you.
