You Didn’t Know I Could Knit, Did You?

January 13th, 2006

Well, there’s a reason for that. I worked with an old Irish woman who always had knitting needles and yarn; they practically grew out of her fingernails like new buds. Eventually, I asked her to teach me how to knit and I made a hideous red scarf that was a foot wide at one end and six inches at the other (I didn’t finish it.). I became somewhat more skilled and decided to try my hand at a sweater – a sweater pattern that the awful lady at Knit NY (yes, I’m naming names) told me would be simple and easy. It was not simple, nor easy and I failed miserably, abondoning knitting for sweeter pastures. Year 2005: My husband bought me gorgeous, hand-spooled, undyed yarn from a man at the Union Square market who spins it himself from his sweet little barn creatures and I was forced into the knotting of things. My delightful friend figured out what the heck “wrap stitch and turn” means and I was able to make this luxurious hat and scarf combo (pictured in white) after first trying the pattern with the gray yarn. I’m happy with it, although I’m still not so sure about this whole knitting thing.

When you come home for a visit, you can try to teach this tired dog a new trick. Tonesha learned to knit last year and she’d love some new tricks as well. :)

By the way, your hair looks fabulous. I like it long. Miss you. Glad to be able to keep up with you via this lovely blog.

Yay! Pictures of the finished hat. You made my day! Both look fabulous and can I just say that your eyes look so pretty in the grey hat pic? Also, I love the irony of you saying I helped you with knitting, and when you link to me the first darn thing you see is my failed project – nice. But whatever, we rock.

I forgot to give you props for the knitted flower too – it looks so cute on there, huh?
