Around Seattle

These are some shots I took when I was on a walk around town during my lunch. I need to start bringing the camera with me more. I like random shots–it helps you to remember the daily aspects of life, which can be both nice and ugly.

My husband, the hero, has successfully fixed my blog without losing any comments (and only one post)! There will still be some tweaking in the upcoming weeks, but I’m back up! and running people! I felt at a loss without this form of communication. Even though I don’t post all the time, it’s nice having the option of posting whenever the mood strikes.

Oh, the Lameness

Okay, so apparently my site has been hacked. Someone has accessed my username and password info and taken it upon themselves to hide information in my code about prescription drugs for men, and other things, if you get my drift. Ryan’s been warning me for some time that I need to update to the newest version of WordPress to prevent this, but it probably means losing all of the comments from you lovelies (and a day’s worth of work to transfer things), so I haven’t done it. Google has officially abolished me from their search engine because of these words, and I would just like to say, shame on you–whoever you are! So, there may be some changes around here and some tweaky things for a while. But have no fear! I’m not going anywhere.

Utensils with Love

Heart Kitchen Utensils by Ben

Heart Kitchen Utensils by Ben

Aren’t these heart kitchen utensils so cute? They were part of my annual spring present from my dear friend Aja, who generally starts a present before Christmas and continues adding to it until I come to visit her in March. It winds up working out really well for me. There were many things in the package, including some handmade goodies by her, but that’s for another time. Her sweet other half is an industrial designer and actually designed all of these, for everything made with love. I used them just last night when making this Smoky Corn Chowder recipe. Everything was heart-shaped!

City Bakery

This is a snapshot I took while sitting and eating the most delicious chocolate chip cookie in the world at City Bakery in NYC last week. I just love how they decorated the place, and mostly how they arrange the baked goods.

Snow!

Snow!

This is a snapshot I took on Saturday . I headed out to get supplies for the advent calendar and when I got back in the car to drive home, large, wet flakes started falling from the sky. It was so beautiful and serene, and I managed to make it home before traffic or the roads got bad. I love how silent the snow makes everything. White is such a peaceful color to begin with, and then once everything is blanketed and the saturated earth becomes silent, it’s hard not to pause and cherish the moment. We got over four inches, but a few short hours after the snow poured down, it warmed up and rained for two days straight.

Owls

Owls

These are some owls in my apparent growing collection of owls. I designed our whole bedroom around the state bird quilt that I started ages ago and is just about done. It inspired a whole flock of birds to nest in our house; I’ve got birds sprinkled all around. These are all in the bedroom. I noticed there isn’t an owl for a state bird. What’s up with that? Have a nice weekend!

Morning Sun

Morning Sun

Morning Sun

I awoke this morning to the sun pouring in through the windows. The house was near icebox temperatures because I wanted to sleep with the down comforter and the quilt on the bed, tucked in a cozy hollow. A friend brought over a grapefruit upside down cake last night, so I took my coffee and a slice of cake sitting in the morning sun. It was peaceful and serene and cold, and I had every desire to stay there in my robe, get out the quilt, and finish hand sewing the binding on. The winter is a perfect time to drape a work-in-progress over your lap and stitch away in front of a fire or a good movie, or both. This is exactly what I have in mind after work today.

Sunny San Francisco

San Francisco

We had a lovely time in San Francisco. The weather was warm, the sun was shining, and the city was bustling. We had a suite with a huge hot tub in the room at this lovely hotel, which was in the heart of downtown. I did some shopping (I posted a pic of my cute new coat and haircut on my About page). San Fran has all the shops I’ve been missing from New York, namely Zara and H&M. We had delicious dinners at the E & O Trading Co. and Millenium, and we spent a lovely afternoon in Japantown and the Ferry Building Marketplace, where these pictures were taken. The market had a mouth-watering selection of high-end shops. We spent a great deal of time lingering over the fungi shop, which had truffles and fancy mushrooms for sale. There was also a French bakery and a chocolatier. Yumm! We’re thinking of taking a longer trip for our anniversary this year back to the city, and perhaps to spend a few days in wine country.

The Other Side

Mushrooms!

Grape VInes, Yakima WA

We drove to the other side of the mountains to go wine tasting in the Yakima Valley. On the drive, we stopped to snap some pictures and ran into some families foraging for mushrooms. This is something I’ve always wanted to do. I’m looking into a guided tour for the next nice day (which, in this country, could be some time next fall!).

We did the wine trip a few years ago and I was impressed by the countryside, the quality of wine, and the prices. This time around the trip felt a little more touristy and the prices certainly reflected that, but we had a wonderful time. The weather was perfectly fall. We stopped at a a farm stand that had delicious pears, apples, peaches, honey, and all things pickled. We came home with a trunk full of goodies. I think some peach cobbler is in the works for later in the week.

Blogiversary

Gasworks

That’s me and Ryan walking in Gasworks Park this summer. I’m late announcing my blogiversary, again. I even wrote it in my calendar, but Friday was a really crappy day at work. I wound up going home, blasting some music, crafting, and polishing off a bottle of wine. I was nowhere near blogging. But, that’s one of the beauties of this form of community. I can spend time, a moment or hours, engrossed in thread, bobbins, and delicious fabric—in my studio or in your online forum. It’s been a great two years sharing with all of you. Thanks for being my encouragement, my supporters, my friends. I’m very thankful for our interactions and to have this place, this method, to share.

My new camera takes nice close-up shots. These are from, again, Ryan playing around with the camera. Photography as an artform is harder for me to grasp than someone with a canvas and paint, where the creation starts from a raw material, the creative inside. But examining the way someone frames something, how a moment is captured from a different perspective, it’s easier to see why photography hangs in a museum. If someone had asked me to take a picture of the sewing machine, a roll of upholstery, a book, and the cat, it would have been a much different thing. The lighting would have been rosier, the set-up less organic, and the overall photo more in context–more realistic.
